What is the difference between a town search, a city search and a county search?
Who is typing it, and who else is competing for it. Someone typing a service plus Keighley is usually in or near Keighley and wants somebody local, so the search is small, specific and quick to convert. The same service plus Bradford draws from a district of more than half a million people, and the competition includes every firm in it with a marketing budget. Plus Yorkshire, and the person is often a buyer at a company, a contractor looking for a subcontractor or someone who does not yet know which town to ask, and the results are dominated by established firms with years of links.
The prize rises at each step, and so does the cost of winning it. The trap is that the word with the biggest volume is usually the one with the least intention of buying from a small firm.
Which should a Keighley business target first?
The town, almost always, and the villages around it, because those are the searches you can win in months and the ones that turn into enquiries from people you can actually get to. A plumber in Silsden gains nothing from ranking in Wakefield. Build the Keighley pages properly, get the profile and the reviews right, and you have a base that earns while the bigger targets are worked on.
There is a second reason. Google trusts a site that is clearly about something, and a small firm that ranks well for its own patch is easier to extend into the next one than a site that tried to be everywhere from day one.
When is Bradford worth targeting?
When a real share of your work already comes from there, or you want it to and can serve it without the travel eating the margin. Keighley is part of the Bradford district, so plenty of businesses along the valley already work in Shipley, Bingley and the city itself. If that is you, a Bradford page written around the jobs you have done there is a fair fight, because most Bradford rivals are no better prepared than the Keighley ones.
Check the competition before you commit. Search the term and count how many of the top ten have a page built for that exact phrase. Three or fewer and it is winnable with proper pages and a year of work. Ten and you are choosing a long fight, which may still be right if the jobs are big enough.
Does targeting Yorkshire ever make sense for a small business?
Yes, for the businesses that genuinely work across the county and sell to buyers who search that way: commercial contractors, specialist manufacturers, firms whose customers are other companies. Bond Brickwork lays brick for national housebuilders on developments across Yorkshire, so the searches that matter to them are commercial brickwork terms with a county or a town attached, and they sit at the top of Google for the ones that count. That took years of steady work on a site built for it.
For a domestic trade or a shop, a Yorkshire page is a page nobody will search for and Google will not believe. People search the county for services that travel, and they search the town for services that do not.
Can one website rank for Keighley, Bradford and Yorkshire at once?
It can, provided each area gets its own page with something true on it, and the site does not pretend to a presence it lacks. A location page needs real jobs in that place, photographs from them, the villages named in ordinary sentences and the practical detail a customer there would want. Swap the town name in the same paragraph three times and Google treats the pages as copies, and so does anyone who reads them.
One more small thing: people type the service first and the place second far more often than the other way round, so write your page titles and headings in that order.
How does Halizona decide this for a client?
We start with where the last two years of work actually came from, then the searches for each area, then how many rivals have built pages for them, and only then the volume figures, which are rough estimates at best. The answer is usually a Keighley base with one or two neighbouring towns, and a county page only where the business earns it. Dolphin Heating in Huddersfield is the clearest example of picking the right size: one van, one town, one search that describes the business exactly, and first place on Google for it.
